Frederick Donald Blake was a Scottish artist drafted a war propagandist during the Second World War. His illustrations are a influenced by his time as an Air Raid Fire Officer and as a propagandist which were further enhanced by his experimentation in the medium of watercolor and his unique style.
- The centroid focus of piece, The United Kingdom, evokes a notion of “against the world” and highlights the ‘UK Experience’ in the war as opposed to the ‘Allied Experience’
- The use of smoke contrasts with the entirety of the piece which is predominantly yellow, blue, and grey. Pops of red draw the eye to the location but never takes the attention away from the centroid.
- All elements are radiating away from the United Kingdom, with slight shifts in the directional leaning of white water to counterbalance that fact. This is almost an allegory to the overarching mentality of protecting the motherland, with enemies being pushed away and allies entering for assistance.
