Ethel Spowers, 'The giant stride', 1933 - Print

$79.00
Minus Plus

is backordered. We will ship it separately in 10 to 15 days.

Ethel Spowers was an Australian painter and printmaker born to a New Zealander. Although she began her career as a fairy-tale illustrator, her most recent work, for which she gathered critical acclaim, used modernistic techniques putting emphasis on colour, flow, with children being the centrepiece of it all.

• Medium: Colour Linocut on Paper
• The use of the same colour to denote skin tone and action of striding allow for a flow that confirms that the piece itself is in motion.
• The colour palette used gives a grounded almost dark theme when considering the shades of reds and greens which is subverted by the use of blues and yellows which allows for a stark contrast.
• Curved light and shadows allow for a sense of depth and dynamic in the piece. The placement of the shadow evokes the idea of grass suggesting an outdoor scene but the harshness of the white background may suggest and indoor scene.
