About Lane Hawkins, the artist:
"My art work and practice is derived from traditional weaving techniques and the taonga found in our natural environment.
I have been a sculptor and weaver since 2005, when I was first introduced to a small table loom. This “warp and weft, over and under process” opened up a world of creativity for me.
In 2010, I graduated from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, having attained a Bachelor in Art and Visual Culture – majoring in Māori weaving under the tutorage of Christina Hurihia Wirihana. I have completed a course in Taiwanese basket weaving taught by master weaver Li-Jung Tseng.
Each individual artwork I create is unique. It represents a connection back in time, to different people and communities, their weaving culture and natural environment. I would like to acknowledge these weavers, from all cultures, for their legacy, expertise and techniques, which have contributed to my knowledge and artwork over time.
I live and work in Nelson, Aotearoa (New Zealand)."
