Designed and made by Abstract Design, this decoration comes as a flatpack kitset that is simple to assemble. The fantail/pīwakawaka is one of New Zealands most well-known and loved native birds. It is distinctive for its tail, which opens out like a fan. One of the methods employed by the fantail to hunt is to capture insects disturbed by the passage of other creatures, including other birds and even humans.
Abstract Design was started in 1992 by Jane and Chris Baxter and produces gifts and homewares with a New Zealand Flavour. Their products are 100% made in New Zealand using locally and sustainably sourced materials. Each step of the process from printing the stock to packaging the product is handled in their Petone factory. The unique designs are inspired by our unique New Zealand identity, nature and rich culture.
